How the CW telegraphy teacher program was created

In the radio club "SAMOBOR" at the course for young operators, I taught telegraphy, and thus I felt the weight of typing a telegram by hand, and the need to pay more attention to candidates while the telegram was "going" became apparent.

As I acquired a super-fast COMMODORE 64 in those years, which already had a good sound chip, the idea came up that a computer could take over the boring part of the work. And so in 1986, the first version of the "CW" program for the C64 was created.

As the program is intended for training telegraph operators, I set some requirements for the program's operation, as a simple and quick entry into the routines, a quick change of parameters and work according to the best method known to me for learning telegraphy (groups of letters from heavier characters to
lighter ones: FPLUXY RJCDZW QGBHKV EMIANOST 3872451690).

The program ran well on the COMMODORE, but the C64 quickly became obsolete and CW was ported to the ATARY ST 1040 in 1988. Unfortunately, there were no courses in the radio club, so the source in GFA basic for ATARY languished on a diskette. After 1995 activity started again in the radio club SAMOBOR (9A1BIJ) and the need for a course and a CW program for PC was shown.

The QB version of the CW program was created on November 5, 1995. and improves during the course itself. Sound output on the PC speaker it shows all the shortcomings, and even through the amplifier it does not give satisfactory results.

15.05.1998. I added an output to the COM and PRINTER port, and using a simple interface, the CW program directly controls the standard buzzer.

After 2000, there were no courses at the club and the CW program is slowly being forgotten.
When the CW program was created, telegraphy was received with pen and paper. Today, connections are made by listening to a radio station and entering into a loger program. Paper and pencil are no longer needed, so it is no longer necessary to learn telegraphy that way either.

It is necessary to learn telegraphy independently so that the PC types in a web browser online. There are already several such programs, but none of them offer a method of learning by groups of letters, from harder to easier characters.

Thanks for that, it made my job easier.

Any remarks, criticisms and suggestions for improving the program are welcome.

Much success in telegraphy op 9A2MI, 73!
