DX Code of Conduct – the DX End

Before travelling read “DXpeditioning Basics” by N7NG and study propagation

Pre-announce priority modes, bands, QSL route, on-line logs, LoTW

Check TX frequency AND the RX range before starting up

You are in charge: issue instructions then ALWAYS stick to them

Operate split when more than 3-4 callers: wide split is OK but narrow spread minimises band-pollution

TX regular content and timing; shift RX frequency in regular pattern

Send your own call-sign at least once per minute

Work and log dupes, it’s quicker

Avoid working by numbers, continents are OK

Prioritise the rarest of the three main geographic areas, pick out weaker signals

Repeat corrected call-signs, so everyone is sure of being safely logged

Send a QSL/TU message at the end of each contact

Give QSY/QRT information before leaving the pile-up

A NEW MORSE CODE LEARNING AID

From the UK FISTS Discussion Group

Current Associated Press news in Morse code

I thought this might be of interest here ... I have developed a free Windows program "RSS Morse" that reads RSS news feeds and outputs Morse Code on your computer's speaker or on a physical telegraph sounder via serial cable. It will send International or American Morse Code, and has adjustable CW radio tone, some old-fashioned spark-gap CW sounds, and several telegraph sounder sounds. You can control the character speed separately from the code speed for Farnsworth effects.

Pre-loaded with Associated Press news feeds via Yahoo News. For a peek at the help file for the program see http://morse-rss-news.sourceforge.net/

To download an installer for RSS Morse https://sourceforge.net/projects/morse-rss-news/ - It's free and open source.

2010 TRANS - TASMAN CW & DIGITAL CONTEST

160m CW & Digital: 26 June 2010, 0800-1300UTC (best 4 hours out of 5)

CW, RTTY, PSK31, and others.

2010 Rules & log sheets

VK Contest Log logging software updated for 2010 contest - - get the latest version before the contest.

PLEASE NOTE:

This contest is run separately from the original VK/TransTasman contest. All logs should be sent to ZL3AKM at the address given below.

This contest has been introduced to fill the gap left by the demise of the previous VK/Trans-Tasman CW contests. While there have been around 50 active stations each year in each of the CW contests, the lack of submitted logs, and the structure of the scoring system made the contest unviable. To address this, the new Trans-Tasman CW & Digital contest aims to boost activity and contact rates by: introducing digital modes to the contest, and allow stations to be contacted twice per hour (once on CW and once on digital). The use of CW decoding software is actively encouraged to boost CW activity.

The scoring system has been modified from the phone VK/Trans-Tasman contest and previous CW only trans-Tasman contests:

No Participation Factor. The points tables have been altered instead to reflect the bias in the number of stations on each side of the Tasman. 160m trans-Tasman and VK/E-VK/W contact points have been increased to reflect the additional difficulty on this band.

A new "Mode Multiplier" has been added for 2010, to encourage stations to try different digital modes, and to try both CW and digital modes. Contacts made in the lowest scoring hour count toward the mode multiplier giving extra incentive to work all hours, even if only a few contacts are made.

a). VK logs must be received either by post, to: VK/ trans-Tasman Contest, 28 Crampon Crescent, Rosanna, VIC. 3084 or by email to: vktasman@hotmail.com in either "Text File / Notepad", "Word doc", "Excel", or scanned hand-written (if legible). b). ZL logs must be received either by post to: VK/trans-Tasman Contest, P.O. Box 21-363 Christchurch 8143or by email to: vktasman@robglassey.com in formats as for VK.

WORKING DX – A FEW TIPS FOR NEWCOMERS

PART ONE

THE QRP OPERATOR

Nigel Hardy, ZL2TX #9040

I love to work QRP (Low Powered Stations using up to 5 watts) and often listen for them on the QRP nominated frequencies of + 60kHz on 20/15/10 Metres (i.e. 14.060MHz). If I hear a QRP operator I will only call them using QRP of 5 watts myself, to try and achieve a two way QRP QSO which is always a thrill for both operators. Only now and again have I managed to work the odd rare DX station here. More often they are elsewhere waiting to pounce on you!

Often there have been problems with higher powered FISTS members operating slightly above their net frequency of 14.058MHz and I have always tried to make it a rule that when I’m trying to contact FISTS to QSY (change frequency) lower than 058 so as not to upset the QRP brigade. Being a member of FISTS I did at one time, suggest that we should keep well clear of the QRP frequency and have 14.048MHz (or +48kHz on 20/15/10 Metres) as the nominated FISTS spot. After all I believe they were there, well before George invented FISTS. Unfortunately nobody listened.

Having said that (bet I’m being cursed!), I have often put out a CQ around 14.045MHz and been called by a QRP Station, including rare ones like C21HC and ZK3HC. Udo Moeller, DL9HCU was the operator in both cases, I guess travelling between the two islands either on business or holiday. He must pack his 5 watt Yaesu FT 817 plus dipole in a separate bag and bring it with him wherever he goes. Missed him from the other Islands – more is the pity, however these two, were new countries for me!

Again as soon as the other station indicates he is QRP I reduce power and answer as ZL2TX/QRP. A few times I have come across a QRP station calling CQ and if I have not been successful raising him with my 5 watts I have tried again using 100 watts but NEVER on the QRP frequency.

The Master of QRP and FISTS Member is Manfred Eisel, HB9DAX. We have worked each other many times on several different bands always using 5 watts. Sometimes signals have been very weak with all filters in use, but that’s half the fun, Morse gets through, whereas other modes wouldn’t!

So if you haven’t worked QRP try it someday it’s quite a buzz! Next Month I will try and give a few tips on working Single Operator DX Stations and the Big One’s The Multi - Operator Sponsored Stations. 73 Nigel

            4.1 High Speed Callsigns Reception.

This test is taken on IBM compatible computers in the presence of two Jury Members. Each competitor has 12 minutes to stay in the test room. After the end of this period the attempt will be aborted, and contestant will get the score he achieved up to his moment. The keyboard must be fit to the US standard (QWERTY). It is NOT allowed to use own headphones and keyboard. The computer should be set by referees.

Competitors will go one after another accordingly to the draw.

During every round a competitor makes two attempts to receive 50 call signs generated by the program and the better attempt shall be taken as the competitor entry. Competitors will compete under their own names or call signs. Contestants have the right to prepare for the first attempt, i.e. to make all possible settings and a test run. Time for these preparations is limited up to two minutes starting with entering the door. Before he/she starts with first attempt he/she should sign the document that everything is working properly. Between first and second attempt a maximum break of one minute is allowed. If the referee states that preparation-/break-time is over, contestant must start attempt immediately. The competitor has the right to choose the starting speed before he/she begins the test. The competitor with the best results in the Call sign receiving Test is awarded a score of 100 points. Other competitors are scored proportionately as in the following example. It is RECOMMENDED that during Amateur Radio Call sign receiving Test the work of competitors to be monitored outside so that the audience could follow the event.

So, the best of TWO attempts will be scored for the final result of the competitor.

4.2 Pile Up Reception.

Time for these preparations is limited up to two minutes starting with entering the room. Before he/she starts the attempt he/she should sign the document that everything is working properly. If the referee states that preparation-/break-time is over, contestant must start attempt immediately. Competitors make as many contacts as possible in a period of 10 minutes. The competitor with the highest number of MR points is awarded of 100 points and the other entrants are scored proportionately lower. It is RECCOMMENDED that during pile up test the work of competitors to be monitored outside so that the audience could follow the event.

So, the best of TWO attempts will be scored for the final result of the competitor.

5.1 New EUCW member club - Marconiclub - Italy

/TNX IK1ZVK Amedeo, Marconiclub award manager/

In our previous bulletin was published the request of Marconiclub to join EUCW.

Since there were no objections received, I am very happy to announce that Marconiclub is already a full EUCW member.

Below is a brief article sent by Amedeo.

Marconi Club History and presentation.

In 1987 when the festivities ended with the winners of international competition "Loan Electra," some of the greatest admirers of CW

attending the event, proposed the creation of a club which aims to welcome all those who truly love and believe in the wonderful art of

telegraphy.

To be entered it would not necessarily have to be among the first on the list of DXers or be the fastest in the transmission or possess

more QSL, but use the radio telegraphy in connections with passion and disseminate and pass on the love for this taught to communicate by

way of the great master.

So it was that the then President of the Chamber of Loano ARI, the late Free Meriggi I1YXN, driven especially by the famous agent Baldur

DJ6SI, laid the foundations of our Club

The idea, accompanied by the 'offer of the Presidency of the newborn Club, was presented to the Marchesa Maria Cristina Marconi, then

patron of the awards ceremony in loan Electra, who enthusiastically welcomed the initiative by accepting the assignment.

The Marquise also gave us the gift of an original photo of Guglielmo Marconi unpublished taken on board his Electra summer of 1936, which

was then inserted into the picture diploma.

And so, after completing the regulation and print the diplomas,

8 May 1988 to the presence of his wife and daughter of the illustrious scientist, officially began the Marconi Club.

6.1 EUCW Chairman service

By the time of preparation of this bulletin I have not received any comments nor any proposals for a new chairman.

I guess this means my term of servive is prolonged by another three years.

Thank you for your confidence.

Sincerely yours, Ivan

6.2 EUCW website

Der ECMs, please check your club's listing on EUCW website. I face all the time problems with bouncing email addresses, and broken website links. Send me updated info, where necessary. There are also some clubs with a club's forwarding email address, distributing messages to already non-existant recipients. Please update this too. All provided info will be forwarded to EUCW webmaster to make necessary updates.

6.3 Bulletin and reflector information

Making this bulletin could be easy.....or hard. Writing an information bulletin, and not a love story novel, I have to include uptodate information about club activities, for the benefit of all of us. It is a very hard task without your support. Any relevant information will be appreciated, such as contest rules and results, award information, special activities etc. Sending a contest or event reminder to the EUCW reflector is also a great benefit. Let's do it. Long live CW.

4.1 Samuel Morse upcoming anniversaries

/TNX Den, 9A3FO/

Samuel Morse, the father of the morse code (and our

telegraphy for ever) lived between 1791 and 1872

and because 220 years of his born (2011) and 140

years of his death (2012) are near, I suggest to all cw

clubs – members of the EUCWA – lets move one big

action how denote this rounds numbers of this histori-

cal years ...

Furthermore I suggest for this two famous anniversari-

es separable two awards for working only cw and only

for Clubs members which are EUCWA members ...

Lets move, lets form one for this action team and lets

make anything great – 2011 and 2012 y are near ...

CWFE

CTC chairman/CTC ECM  Den – 9A3FO

Only my little conception :

If  (Morse's birthyear and deathyear) rewards will be diplomas

with Morse's illustrations I suggest  that this illustrations are shown

(under letters) across the whole surface of the support (paper) .

The creator of this diploma (if has no better illustration of Morse's

face od body) can take it from CTC web www.hamradio.hr/ctc

Den - 9a3fo

Comment by LZ1PJ:

Thank you Den for the nice idea.

Dear friends, we have enough time to think this idea over. There are many ways to implement it, Diploms are surely OK. Everyone will be proud to have one on his display wall. This could be supported by activity day(s), or week, or even a one-time contest. I will ask your support with possible projects. Please send me your comments and ideas. There is also the need of volunteer(s) to help organize these events, to design the diploms etc. I myself can arrange cheap and high quality printing, and dispatching. Any help will be appreciated.

Comment by LZ1PJ:

Marconi club is a generic CW club having several hundred members. Having more than 100 members, the club qualifies for a full (voting) member. You can see all information on their website (see link above). According to EUCW constitution the application is considered approved, if there are no objections by any member club. Please send me your votes. Lack of vote from a member club will be considered a POSITIVE vote.

6.1 EUCW Chairman service

According EUCW constitution, the terms of service of the Chairman is 3 /three/ years. I took over this position in January 2007, from late Oscar, ON5ME. Having fulfilled 3 years service, I have to remind you, that every voting member has the right to nominate a candidate for new chairman. If there is more than one nomination, next chairman will be appointed by voting.

If a member club is going to make nomination, please do it not later than 20th march, to be able to include it in next bulletin, and put it to voting.

Suggestions for DX Pile-ups………… by Uncle DX

  1. The DX station operators are in charge of any pile-up.
  2. The DX station should make and adhere to their operating rules quietly and respectfully.
  3. The DX station should use, when appropriate, call areas and areas of the world for better accuracy, rate and order.
  4. The DX station should use split operation and spread stations out, keeping in mind others not in the pile-ups. A must.
  5. The DX station should give their call sign at least every 10 minutes and maintain a pattern especially when ending a QSO.
  6. The DX station should create a rhythm or timing which maintains a good rate and allows the pile-up to call at the right time.
  7. The operators in the pile-up, if not sure of a QSO, should dupe and the DX operator continue not wasting time commenting.
  8. The DX station should work those who will create the fastest rate, at least at first, then make an effort to work the weaker stations.
  9. No one should lecture on the air.
  10. Everyone should always require and give full calls.
  11. Know and practice the gray line.
  12. Know the equipment being operated such as the split button, audio levels, keying wave form, etc.
  13. NEVER be a "KC Cop"….never.
  14. Operators giving spots on a DX Cluster should insure their accuracy!
  15. Keep away from personal, political, and religious comment any time on the air and/or the DX Cluster. Keep all comments in the true spirit of ham radio whereby ALL ARE EQUAL.
  16. Don't rush when giving your call when the DX station is standing by, especially on CW. Time will be lost trying to obtain ALL of the call sign.
  17. Don't call the DX station constantly. Get in the rhythm.
  18. Let the last station complete his QSO.
  19. Use only the power it takes and figure out what that is!
  20. Figure out the DX operator's operating practice for greater success.
